Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value (referred to as “the stakes”) on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods. Typically, the outcome of the wager is evident within a short period.
The term gaming in this context typically refers to instances in which the activity has been specifically permitted by law. The two words are not mutually exclusive; i.e., a “gaming” company offers (legal) “gambling” activities to the public and may be regulated by one of many gaming control boards, for example, the Nevada Gaming Control Board. However, this distinction is not universally observed in the English-speaking world. For instance, in the UK, the regulator of gambling activities is called the Gambling Commission (not the Gaming Commission). Also, the word gaming is frequently used to describe activities that do not involve wagering, especially online.
Gambling is also a major international commercial activity, with the legal gambling market totaling an estimated $335 billion in 2009. In other forms, gambling can be conducted with materials which have a value, but aren’t real money; for example, games like Pogs or Magic: The Gathering.
Yoohooo! Yesterday I have received my driving license. In Sweden we call it körkort. Immediately I took my sister’s car and went to meet my friends. Today I asked my sister to give me her car again and went to the university. It is pleasure to go by car. You are listening to your favorite music and sit in comfortable car while outside is raining. I am happy that half a year ago my father pushed me to go to driving school.
I am the first who received körkort among my friends. When I told them that I have passed all exams (teoriprov), they proposed to organize road trip to the south of Sweden. I agreed. Soon we will have winter holidays and can go there for some days. It could happen only if my sister will give me car. She doesn’t need it everyday, because she is housewife. I could ask car to dad, but he is going to work every day by car.
We live in Goteborg. We are going to visit Helsingborg and Malmö during our trip. I am also suggesting visiting Copenhagen because it is easily reached from Malmö by bridge. My mom is afraid to let me go by car so far, because she thinks that I am not driving well. She is wrong actually because I drive well. The only thing I don’t have yet is much experience, but I can’t get it without practice. So this trip will be trial to my driving ability and to my recently got körkort. I hope that everything will be alright and we all have great holidays.
